How to choose your kurti size

How to pick a kurti size online using your own measurements, the size chart and the fabric.

By Jyoti Singh. Updated

Kurti sizing varies a lot between brands, and the cut changes how much room you need. Use your own measurements and the chart for the exact kurti you are looking at.

Take three measurements

Measure your bust at the fullest point, your waist at the narrowest point, and your hip at the widest point. Keep the tape snug but not tight. Note the numbers in centimetres.

Know whether the chart shows body or garment size

Some size charts list body measurements and some list the garment itself. If the chart says “garment”, the numbers include ease, so they should be larger than your body measurements. If it says “body”, pick the size that matches your measurements. When a chart does not say which it is, treat that as a reason to check the reviews for fit comments.

Match the cut to how much ease you want

  • A straight cut sits close to the body and needs the chart size to be near your measurement.
  • An A-line cut flares from the bust or waist, so the hip has more room.
  • An anarkali flares widely, so the bust and waist matter most.

Check the sleeve and length

Sleeve length and kurti length are often listed in the details. Measure your own arm from shoulder to wrist and your preferred length from shoulder to knee or calf, then compare.

Think about fabric

Cotton can shrink slightly in the first wash. Rayon drapes and can feel looser. A fabric with some stretch is more forgiving at the bust and hip. If you are between sizes and the fabric has no stretch, choose the larger size and, if needed, get it altered.

Use reviews for fit, not for taste

Look for comments that say whether a kurti runs small, large or true to size, and what height and size the reviewer wore. One comment is a hint. Several saying the same thing is a pattern.

Common questions

Should I size up in kurtis?

If you are between sizes and the fabric has no stretch, yes. Cotton can also shrink a little in the first wash.

What if the chart does not say body or garment?

Treat it as a warning and look for fit comments in reviews before you buy.
